Artist Statement

Zerric Clinton Ph.D

Creating art has been a part of me since I was a child. In first grade I remember my friends and I having drawing contests. We looked forward to the challenge of competing to see who could draw something the most realistic. At the time I did not realize that this creativity was passed down to me from my parents. Both my parents are very creative and they are highly skilled. So I owe my creativeness and skill in art to them both. As a youngster they promoted my interest in art purchasing sketchbooks, pencils and a variety of other art materials, which encouraged me to continue to draw and pursue a BFA in college. Today my work is based on things that I see or hear through music about things in society. So, my work tells a story about social issues that affect people. Listening to music is a huge part of my creative process as it stimulates my thoughts in terms of the way I use color and create a sense of rhythm. Since I am an abstract artist I use a variety of shapes to shatter the image, which compels the viewer to not only focus on the subject. It also compels the viewer to also pay close attention to the textural qualities and symbolism that exist to add meaning and another dimension to my work. Sometimes I choose to use paint while other times I select dry media. Both lend well to the types of textural qualities and areas of color that I am compelled to employ in my work.

THIS & THAT Series

This and That series is a group of images where symbolism and textural qualities were used to signify each geographical region of the United States. The symbols are sometimes easy to recognize while other times the images feature subtle symbolism that compels the viewer to consider what each image represents. As an artist that deals with social issues this is the latest series that Zerric has created as a response to things that have occurred following the 2016 election. Subsequently, black and white colors were used to make sure that the viewer is able to easily discern the symbols that were used.

SneakerHeadz Series

The Sneakerheadz series is a where I show how sneakers have revolutionized the way that people classify being cool. At this point wearing sneakers with casual and even dress attire has become an everyday scene in our society and the sneaker industry has marketed their products very well. Specifically, Nike has capitalized in this once again by creating a controversial ad that highlights different athletes. Namely, Kolin Kaepernick who in the eyes of some has been blackballed from the NFL. Coming out with this ad was a risk for Nike, but from the way that sales have increased it seems like the risk has turned into a huge reward.

South Carolina Series

South Carolina series depicts nine symbolic images of the parishioners that were senselessly taken away from their families on June 17, 2015 at historic Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina. In this series the symbols serve as reminders of why these none people were such important societal members. These are not symbols that serve as reminders of a horrific event. Instead, they are a celebration of the lives.
